Libraries: An excellent investment!
Economical ... efficient ... essential
* "The gem of the community" - public libraries in Indiana
welcomed more than 42 million visitors last year.
* Indiana's libraries rank #2 in the nation on library visits per capita
(7.2%) and #3 in the nation on circulation per capita (13.7%)
* Public libraries provide almost 9,000 jobs in Indiana with more than 2,000
additional jobs in the businesses that support libraries.
* Salaries & expenditures generate $328 million in economic activity in the state.
* The market value of the range of services Indiana public libraries provide is
more than $568 million.
* The national average cost to use the library is about $31 per person per year.
* Thousands of Hoosiers rely on libraries for access to 3-government
services. They depended on libraries to file claims for unemployment,
to submit tax returns, etc. More than 30% of the states population
do not own a home computer and use library computers to search for jobs and
receive homework and research assistance.
* Libraries save visitors thousands of dollars by offering books, magazines, DVDs and
other resources for check-out. Top-quality programs are offered for every age;
youngsters benefit from a variety of early reading programs, too!
* The American Library Association & the Indiana Library Federation encourage people to
speak up about the importance of their libraries by writing to representatives and
communicating with decision-makers. SUPPORT YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY!

The Fall Party was a great success!
The Fall Party that the Peru
Public Library hosted on Saturday, October 26th, was a great success.
There were a little more than 174 people in attendance. The children, as well
as the adults, had fun playing the different games and having lunch with us as
well.
We want to thank those that
helped us, we couldn’t do it without our sponsors and helpers.
A special thank you goes to
the Peru High
School’s
Golden Guard. Six of their members came to help run the games for us. They are:
Abby Laudenschlager, Cordelia Cole, Mallory Struble, Isaac Badry, Hope Claus,
and Mojade Adejokun. They did a great job.
We also wish to thank Sharon
Edwards, Seth Perry, Katie Perry, Angie Gross, and Cooper Wolfe for their help
with the games and activities and serving of the food.
J. B. Ladd’s generosity for
donating the pumpkins, Joe Gross, he personally hand picked the pumpkins by
himself, and Doud Orchard for the apples that we gave to the children.
The hardest part was the
tearing down, clean up, and putting away of the games, tables, etc.
A special thanks goes to
Pamela Perry, Seth Perry, Katie Perry, Jackson Perry, Mike Farnham and Tom
Hall.
To our staff that without
them, it wouldn’t have happened. Maryann Farnham, Terri Hall, Eileen Gross,
Carla Murtha, and Cody Rasberry.

Here's your chance to show off your talented skills and help YOUR library at the same time.
Decorate a wreath for Christmas, and donate it to the library. We will have a silent auction, and the wreaths will be judged. The top 3 winners will receive a gift certificate from The Siding Restaurant and a Friends of the Library T-Shirt. The 1st place winner will also receive a free, 1-year membership to the Friends of the Library.
The wreaths are to be no bigger than 18 inch diameter.
The wreaths are to be brought in between Nov. 4th - 8th. They will be on display until Dec. 5th.
at which time they will be judged. The lucky winners will be able to take them home on Friday, Dec. 6th. Plenty of time to decorate your homes and enjoy them for Christmas.
The wreaths will be on display in the Reference Room/Computer Lab; bids may be placed at the Reference desk. We're excited to see what beautiful and clever wreaths you come up with.
Thank you for your support!
October 20 - 26 is National Friends of the Library Week. Unfortunately, we have been without a Friends of the Library (FOL) for almost 2 years, but that has changed. We have many projects in mind for fundraising and programs that the FOL will be directly involved in.
But first, we need members. We are having FOL T-Shirts made that will be sold, but those that become members get theirs as part of the membership fee. Actually, you'll get to choose between a T-Shirt or a bag.
"What exactly is the Friends of the Library, and what do they do?" you may ask. The FOL is a membership that provides support and is an advocate to the Public Library. They provide many services and are a valued part of any library.
They help get the books sorted and ready for the books sales, but so much more.
They have the opportunity to help serve food at different functions, sometimes prepare it as well, and of course, attend the function.
Be a presence at different programs and functions, enabling the staff or guests to be able to do what is necessary, instead of passing out brochures, keeping an eye out for the kiddies, attending the various needful things that always needs doing.
Be involved in the programs for the kids. Sometimes take an active part, like be the 'group leader' for a team. Sometimes, being there to direct people to the right location.
What are the benefits?
Members always get to come to the early viewing of the book sales, which means of course, they get first choice on the books for sale.
They get to meet new people, make new friends, and sometimes, discover new hobbies. You never know when a program may spark an interest.
In the event we have a program that there will be a charge to attend, if you are a volunteer, you can attend for free.
We need people to show their support and share their ideas. Come next week and find out more. More will be posted later on this.

Fall Party!
Saturday, October 26th, will be our annual Fall Party. This year we have about 8 or 9 games to play and a Bounce House. Come to the parking lot of the Peru Public Library at 3:00 for the fun to begin.
We plan on this fun time to last 2 hours. The children will get to go and play the different games as many times as they wish, receiving candy each time they play.
Toward the end of the program, we'll be serving hot dogs, chips, and a drink. We'll have enough food to feed 200 people.
When the children come, they'll need to get a raffle ticket. We'll have a few prizes that will be drawn for, plus the child will need their raffle ticket to get their hot dog.
We ask that the children DO NOT wear costumes. The parking lot will be a busy place, with much activity going on. We don't want their to be a risk of a child getting injured or their costume torn or dirtied.
This event is free. Children MUST be accompanied by an adult.
